DJ, RADIO PRESENTER AND TV HOST.
Known to the Reggae world as Robbo Ranx, Roger Robinson has grown
to be one of the UKs biggest Dancehall selectors and one of the
most enduring characters on British radio. His talent as a selector
has expanded to almost every major city in the UK and Europe. Robbo
is enjoying increasing International popularity especially in the
US, Jamaica and Japan.
His ground breaking show Dancehall Splurt provoked one of the
largest radio figures on the BBC with millions of listeners world
wide, live and online, earning him in 2003 two Sony Radio Awards
for the best weekly show and best live event. Robbo has taken his
talents worldwide and interviewed a variety of reggae legends on
home turf and abroad, from capturing Sizzlas first ever radio interview,
to exclusive one on ones with Buju Banton, Capleton and Bounty
Killer to name a few. Robbo has now extended his expertise to television,
presenting the weekly Dancehall music show Turn it Up and also
features in Touch magazine with his monthly column.
Coming from a large humble family in North West London, music
at an early age was a way of release and escape for Robbo. Anything
from, jumping on a microphone, to feeling out the strings on his
brothers guitar. Robbo Ranx early introduction to music was like
most, through a sound system, learning the art of entertaining
on Tippertone, a sound he and school friends formed in 1986. To
gain experience he frequently played for free at School discos,
house parties, youth centres, blues dances and sound clashes.
All the skills learnt as a teenager were put in action in 89 when
the game became a full time career. From production and running
a record label to promoting and playing his own sound, Musik Street.
By 1991 a succession of UK hit recordings were to follow with acts
General Levy, Sweetie Irie, Chuckie Starr and International artists
Jack Radics and Bobo General.
1993 saw Robbo and Musik Street attracting a huge following. He
was then called upon to host a show on a pirate radio station in
west London, Skyline FM. The quick success of the show moved him
onto Harlesden based Unique FM in 1997. His personality and voice
on air coupled with the popularity of his street sound gained him
accolades of awards from best Radio show to best Sound system.
In 1999, Robbo took his Dancehall audience to the heart of Londons
west end to the now, legendary night, Uptown Splurt. There youll
find the all dancehall stars when visiting the UK. Performances
from Sean Paul to Sanchez also sound systems like Stonelove, Bass
Odyssey and Tony Matterhorn have all helped to raise the Splurts
street appeal. Imposing a weekly attendance of three to four hundred
people since its launch.
After a short spell on Londons Choice FM, in 2002 Robbo was called
to present on a new challenging project by the BBC, the black music
station 1Xtra.
There you can hear him, constantly searching to expose Reggae
dancehalls new talent. With an ability to communicate with his
audiences, Robbo Ranx is regarded as an integral player in the
growth of Dancehall in the UK, which was once seen as minority
music. Hes an entertainer by nature always out to please his audience
and a serious trusted taste - maker who brings the freshest Dancehall
to an ever increasing worldwide fan base.
Catch Robbo Ranx on 1xtra Tuesday 10pm Midnight and Thursday 7pm
10pm and now hosting a brand new Dancehall Video countdown show
